Dear Parent or Guardian,
From mid-October until the beginning of December, and again in the spring, students will be given the opportunity to participate in a “book club” program. The program will be run by Patty Perkins, the middle school gifted and talented coordinator, Chris Griffin, York Eight language arts teacher; and Paul Clifford, the York Eight social studies teacher. This fall we will be reading Killer Angels and in the spring we will be reading sections of The People’s History of the United States: Volume I: American Beginnings to Reconstruction. Students will assigned several “reflection” questions each week to work on in their journals.
Students will be meeting during the DSSR blocks as a group to discuss what they have read and answer any questions they have about the text. Students who wish to participate must see Mr. Clifford prior to October 9, 2007. Participation must be voluntary and students will be assigned an additional workload if they choose to participate in this activity. Students that are interested in a high school honors placement are strongly encouraged to participate in both book groups. Space is limited and all participants must fill out an application that can be picked up from Mr. Clifford in room 110. If there are any questions please contact Mr. Clifford at cliffp@portlandschool.org or at 207-874-8140 Extension 110.
Sincerely,
Paul Clifford
